If you’re new to homeschooling in California, you’re in the right place.

One of the biggest surprises for many families is that there isn’t just one way to homeschool. California offers several different education options, and each one has its own benefits, requirements, and level of support.

Some families choose to homeschool completely on their own by filing a Private School Affidavit (PSA). With this option, you are responsible for planning your child’s education, selecting curriculum, keeping records, and managing your homeschool independently.

Families who want a little more support often choose a Private Satellite Program (PSP). A PSP is an existing private school that allows you to homeschool under its umbrella. Instead of filing your own Private School Affidavit, the PSP handles the school’s paperwork and maintains your child’s official school records. You remain your child’s primary teacher—you choose the curriculum, plan the lessons, teach the classes, and decide how your homeschool operates. Many PSPs also offer optional benefits such as transcripts, guidance, field trips, graduation ceremonies, testing opportunities, and homeschool community events, although the services vary from one PSP to another.

Many families also choose a Charter Independent Study Program. In this option, parents continue to teach their children at home while working with a public charter school. Depending on the charter, families may receive curriculum, educational funds, teacher support, enrichment classes, and other resources.

Not all charter schools are homeschool programs. California also has many Brick-and-Mortar Charter Schools, where students attend classes on campus with credentialed teachers just like they would at a traditional public school.

Some charter schools offer Online Charter Programs, where students attend live or self-paced virtual classes from home. Although students learn from home, they are enrolled in a public school and follow the school’s attendance requirements, academic calendar, policies, and teacher expectations.

Some charter schools also offer Hybrid Programs, which combine homeschooling with scheduled in-person classes, learning centers, labs, or enrichment activities. Depending on the school, these in-person components may be required or optional.

With so many choices available, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed at first.
